Welcome and thank you for attending the PPPS 2019 (2019 IEEE Pulsed Power and Plasma Science) conference in Orlando, Florida. In keeping with the every six-year tradition, this is the fourth time that the PPC (IEEE International Pulsed Power Conference) and the ICOPS (IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science) have combined for a joint conference. PPPS 2019 will cover both traditional ICOPS topics such as plasma physics and engineering as well as traditional PPC topics such as pulsed power science and technology. We hope to make this conference as successful as PPPS 2001 in Las Vegas, PPPS 2007 in Albuquerque, and PPPS 2013 in San Francisco. This full week meeting allows us to see more of the talks and posters that we are primarily interested in as well as giving us the opportunity to see related talks and posters without having to attend a separate conference. PPPS 2019 features a mini-course entitled “Theoretical and Computational Methods in Plasma Physics” that will be held on the weekend prior to the conference, June 22-23.
Orlando is known as “The Theme Park Capital of the World" as it is home to Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando, and Legoland. Orlando is among the top tourist destinations in the United States. Orlando is also just a few hours’ drive from beautiful coastal beaches and the Kennedy Space Center. The conference hotel, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel at the Entrance to Universal Orlando, is just across the street from Universal Orlando Resort. PPPS 2019 features daily bus service from the meeting area to Universal during the lunch hours where attendees can enjoy all the food offerings of Universal CityWalk with options ranging from high end to fast food. You may even find time for a movie at the cinema there. Additionally, the Tuesday “ Night Out” will be held at CityWalk and features a “Block Party” with several venues including a live reggae band, dueling piano players and liveband karaoke. Discounted, “After 4 PM” tickets to Universal will also be available for anyone who wants to enjoy the many rides and attractions at the theme park.
As with previous PPPS meetings, this combined conference makes no distinction between PPC and ICOPS participants. Every presenter has the opportunity to have his or her abstract published in IEEE Xplore as is the tradition with ICOPS. Also, every presenter has the opportunity to publish a proceedings paper in Xplore, as is the tradition with PPC. There will be a special issue of IEEE TPS (Transactions on Plasma Science) for plenary and invited speakers, as is the tradition with ICOPS as well as a special issue of TPS open to all presenters, as is the tradition with PPC. Additionally, as is the custom for PPC, the proceedings of this conference will be combined with those of all past PPC conferences and distributed to all attendees on a USB thumb drive. We owe a great debt to the hard work of our Technical Program Chairs, Joshua Leckbee of Sandia National Laboratories and Chunqi Jiang of Old Dominion University. They have worked tirelessly to create an optimized technical program extended over a full five days. Please thank them for their hard work leading up to this very large conference .Many thanks also to our Treasurer, Stuart Jackson, Mini-Course Organizer, Arati Dasgupta, and Communications Chair, Steve Richardson, all from the Naval Research Laboratory. They have all done a huge amount of volunteer work to make PPPS 2019 a success. I must also thank the Conference Manager, Lisa Boyd, of IEEE Meetings, Conferences & Events for all her work in making this and many previous conferences run smoothly.
Sadly, we have lost prominent members of the pulsed power community including Phil Spence, a past winner of the IEEE Marx Award, and Roger White, a past winner of the IEEE Haas Award. Memorial sessions for these great leaders in the field will be held before morning plenary sessions during this conference.
Finally, on behalf of all the PPPS 2019 organizers, I hope you have a successful and enjoyable conference in Orlando, Florida. We have worked to make this conference both technically rewarding as well as an enjoyable social event. I look forward to seeing you in Orlando - save travels!
Dr. Raymond Allen
General Chair, PPPS 2019
